I had so much hesitation about buying a Young Living starter kit. Buying a “starter kit” sounds like big commitment if you are new to essential oils and don’t know what you would use them for. I want to reduce that anxiety for YOU.
As a result of my healthy living journey, I am interested in having good quality essential oils for my family. But I don’t have an unlimited budget to buy all the different oils and products available.
I have been aware of Young Living essential oils for a while now. I love knowing that Young Living has a line of oils that can be taken internally.
I’ve also used cheaper, lower quality essential oils for their topical and aromatic benefits. Many books about essential oils will tell you not to consume oils.
This advice makes sense because not all oils have the same level of purity. You would definitely not want to consume any essential oil that is not marked as safe for consumption.
The fact that Young Living’s oils are so pure they can be taken internally also makes me feel better about using them on my family’s skin and in the air we breathe.
Buying Oils from Young Living
Looking at the Young Living site, it is clear the best way to try essential oils is to buy a starter kit now, and then get future orders at wholesale prices of 24% off later, if you decide to try more oils and products.
You could buy single oils or blends and products at the retail prices without buying a starter kit, but the full retail prices are pretty high. It wouldn’t be worth it for me to buy a couple of oils to try at the full retail prices. Because of that, I wouldn’t feel comfortable encouraging someone to pay the full retail prices, even if I could earn a commission on those sales.
Even the wholesale prices are really high compared to lower quality oils from other companies. If budget is an issue for you, like it is for me, I will show you how I am saving money while still buying amazing quality products for my family.
Starter kit basics
Practically speaking, you need to start with a starter kit. The Young Living starter kit costs $160, so that is no small cost on it’s own. However, you will actually want to budget about $180 to account for sales tax and shipping. But the starter kits gives you an introduction to the company and a selection of products to use in your home.
Buying a starter kit makes you a member of Young Living. Young Living a multi-level marketing company, so you either join under someone who uses and promotes Young Living products or you get assigned to someone who uses and promotes Young Living. Being a member of Young Living does not commit you to any future purchases beyond the starter kit.
I knew exactly who I wanted to join under because I knew this person would be a helpful leader for oil training and also business training (if I were to decide to go that route). There are no requirements to sell oils, and there are no requirements to buy anything after you have purchased the starter kit. But if you do choose to make future purchases they will be 24% off.
Choosing a Young Living Starter Kit
There are a few different Young Living starter kits you could choose. The Premium Starter Kit and the Thieves Starter Kit seem to be the most popular and both cost $160. Plan for about $180 with taxes and shipping.
The Thieves Starter Kit includes mostly cleaning and personal care products and a couple of oils, while the Premium Starter Kit includes mostly essential oils and a diffuser.
There are also kits that include make up, NingXia wellness drinks, and different essential oil diffusers. Some of these starter kits are more expensive. You can view all available starter kits here.
If you are anything like me, you can’t simply add more expenses without knowing you are replacing other expenses in your budget. That fact convinced me to buy the Thieves Starter Kit.
In fact, after I purchased the Thieves Starter Kit, I immediately removed some cleaning and personal care products from my upcoming Grove Collaborative order. I actually saw costs spent in one area related to savings in another area.
This is a great example where the “best value” option may not be the best value for you or me.
I say this because the Premium Starter Kit is actually the best value looking at the costs of each item individually. That kit comes with an essential oil diffuser and 11 different essential oils and blends.
Either kit would be a great choice . Since I chose the Thieves Starter Kit, that means I will want to buy an essential oil diffuser in a later order since my starter kit choice didn’t come with the diffuser.
When you purchase a diffuser separately from a starter kit, you will get a free tangerine (5 ml) and a peppermint (5 ml) essential oil to start with.

Essential Rewards
After you select a starter kit, you will be encouraged to sign up for Essential Rewards. Essential Rewards is an optional program that rewards you for consistently buying at least $50 worth of wholesale products every month.
I did not sign up for Essential Rewards at the time I purchased my starter kit. It did not make sense for my budget to do it right then. However, I do plan to join Essential Rewards in my 2nd month to start earning free oils and points to use toward even more free oils. Plus, ER members get discounted shipping!
Keep in mind, once you start using and loving the essential oils and cleaning and personal care products in your starter kit, you will be able to replace existing expenses in your budget with Young Living products and reduce chemicals in your home at the same time.
Promoting Young Living as a business
If you plan to promote Young Living as a business, you will definitely want to sign up for Essential Rewards by your 2nd month. You are required to order a minimum of $50 in personal volume (PV) in order to earn certain bonuses for that month ($100 PV for even higher commission levels).
When I purchased my Young Living starter kit, I got credit for $100 personal volume (PV) my first month. This means I did not need to add any additional products to my order to be eligible for bonuses for getting friends to join with me that month. Yay!
If you don’t plan to promote Young Living as a business or you don’t have it in your budget to buy oils or other Young Living products every month, don’t feel bad! You will still be an active member of Young Living and, therefore, be eligible for the 24% wholesale discount by placing a $50 minimum order each year.
Wrap Up – What I Chose
- I decided buying Young Living essential oils would be good for my family because the high level of purity is important to me.
- Considering my family’s needs, I purchased the Thieves Starter Kit for $160 (almost $180 with shipping & taxes) to get me started. However, if I had bought the Premium Starter Kit, I would already have a diffuser.
- After receiving my kit, I will join Essential Rewards (ER) in my 2nd month as a member of Young Living. This will help me consistently try new products and earn free products at the same time. (My first ER order will include a diffuser.)
Connie Maphale says
IF I BUY A PREMIUM STARTER KIT IS IT BENEFICIAL TO OPT FOR ESSENTIAL REWARDS ON THE 2ND MONTH. IF I HVE PPLE WHO WANT TO JOIN SHOULD I ADvise them to subscribe for ER? For me to qualify for STar level how many pple should I enrol with how many points.
Dawn says
The way Young Living and Essential Rewards (ER) works has changed for the better since I started. Now you can count your starter kit as your first month on ER, so I would now recommend opting for ER right away to start earning points toward free products. To be a Star, you and the people who join with you need to purchase a total of $500 in qualified purchases per month. There is no requirement for a certain number of people to enroll under you for you to be a Star. Technically you could meet the dollar amount by yourself if you choose to purchase $500 in products every month. You would never want more than 6 people enrolled directly under you. For any person you enroll beyond 6, you would want to place them under people you have already enrolled in order to have the maximum benefit for you and your team. I hope this helps!
