This is my favorite recipe that I have posted on my blog. In fact, I think the only seasoning I use more than taco seasoning is garlic — and I even use garlic powder in this recipe!
My family LOVES Mexican style dinners. I fix them for my family just about every week. But these meals are traditionally high in sodium. One way I cut back on sodium is to make my own homemade taco seasoning. By following the recipe below you can save 250 mg sodium per serving.
Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup chili powder
- 1/4 cup onion powder
- 1/8 cup ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon celery salt
Instructions
- Put all ingredients into mixing bowl and stir until well blended.
- Pour mixture into a jar or canister.
- Use 1.5 tablespoons and 2/3 cup water for each pound of meat (works well with chicken, ground beef or ground turkey).
Each serving of this homemade taco seasoning contains about 120 mg sodium compared to the store bought seasoning packets that contain 370 mg sodium per serving. This recipe will make about 11 pounds of taco meat when using 1.5 tablespoons per pound of meat.
Reducing your sodium intake is not the only reason why making your own taco seasoning is a great idea. You can also eliminate unnecessary ingredients including:
- maltodextrin
- corn starch
- yellow corn flour
- partially hydrogenated soybean oil
- yeast extract
- natural flavor
- wheat starch
- whey
- soy flour
It makes me feel better to know what I am putting into my family’s bodes — especially when we use taco seasoning so often!
Have I convinced you to try making your own taco seasoning yet?
