When strawberries are abundant and available at low prices, this is the process I use for how to freeze strawberries to save money throughout the year.
Freezing strawberries is not hard. I didn’t always know the best tips to freeze strawberries, so I thought I would share this for others like me.
When I recently found strawberries at Aldi for just $.99 per pound, I had to stock up. That price is a rare.
I’ve seen frozen strawberries at Aldi for $2.29 for a 12 oz package. So freezing strawberries when they are on sale and available at low prices is a great way to same money and on eating strawberries throughout the year.
How to Freeze Strawberries – Steps I Used
Step 1 – Wash strawberries, cut off tops, and cut into chunks the size of what you plan to use later.
Step 2 – Spread strawberries in a single layer onto a parchment-lined sheet pan. Use paper towels to remove excess moisture. If you have a lot of strawberries, you may need to do this in several batches.
Step 3 – Put sheet pan in freezer to freeze strawberries. About 30 minutes should be long enough, but a few hours is ok too. This keeps the individual strawberries separated for easier use later.
Step 4 – Put frozen strawberries into pint-sized plastic baggies or a freezer-friendly container of choice.
Step 5 – Put 3-4 pint-sized baggies filled with strawberries into a gallon-sized freezer bag.
How to Use Frozen Strawberries
Strawberries that have been frozen do not have the same texture as fresh strawberries. When fresh strawberries are in season, I often slice them up and serve as a side dish own their own. I wouldn’t do that with frozen strawberries that have been thawed, because then don’t maintain the same firmness.
Here are some of my favorite ways to use frozen strawberries:
- Add frozen strawberries to baked oatmeal for breakfast. No need to thaw in advance. This is my favorite way to use frozen strawberries.
- Thaw and stir strawberries into plain Greek yogurt with a little honey.
- Thaw and serve on top of ice cream. Yum!
- Add to a bowl of cereal or top warm waffles.
- They would also be great added to smoothies.
